Dr Peijun Gong received his PhD training in the Optical+Biomedical Engineering Laboratory at The University of Western Australia (UWA, Perth, Australia). Following the completion of his PhD in 2016, he continued his postdoc research at UWA as a Research Associate and then was promoted to a Research Fellow in 2018. His research focused on the development of OCT angiography and lymphangiography techniques and their applications to the assessment of burns (in collaboration with Prof Fiona Wood, recipient of 2005 Australian of the Year award) and eye diseases. In 2020, he joined the Bioimaging Research and Innovation for Translational Engineering laboratory at UWA and Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, to extend his research to OCT-based elastography techniques and the clinical translation to the assessment of breast cancer. Dr Gong’s PhD and early-career postdoc research has led to 19 journal publications in multiple journals, including Biomedical Optics Express, Journal of Biophotonics, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces and Journal of Applied Physiology.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is increasingly used for biomedical and clinical imaging applications since the improved practicality brought by Fourier-domain OCT. Recent advances of OCT have attracted a large body of work to extend OCT for acquiring additional tissue contrasts to supplement the original OCT reflectance signal. These extensions include the widely used OCT angiography, the still emerging OCT lymphangiography and the gradually expanding elastography. This talk will give an overview of these OCT-based multifunctional imaging modalities, illustrating their work principle and showcasing their recent technical development and promising applications.
